Canada Holiday - Bear Watching Tours
The black bear is by far the most common — found in all provinces and territories except Prince Edward Island. You’ll know it when you see it by its flat roman-style nose and strong flat shoulders. Far from being just black, you may also see blue-black, brown, dark brown, even cinnamon-coloured "black" bears!
True brown (or grizzly) bears are mostly found in British Columbia, Alberta, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. You’ll know a grizzly by its concave face, larger claws, and shoulder hump. Both black and grizzly bears share a love for scavenging food from campers, but will generally try to avoid human contact unless threatened or angry.
The polar bear is the world’s largest land-based carnivore, and is quite at home in the frigid temperatures of northern Manitoba and Ontario. Difficult to spot on barren icefields with its snow-white coat, this king of the great white north even gives his name to the region — the word arctic comes from the ancient Greek word Arktos, meaning bear.
