Holidays to Canada - Country Inns of the Maritimes Fly-Drive Ref: C46

Halifax * Charlos Cove/Sherbrooke * Sydney Area * Margaree/Mabou * Charlottetown * Shediac/Sackville/Moncton * St. Martins * Digby * Lunenburg/Mahone Bay * Halifax
The peninsulas and islands of Atlantic Canada form a truly unique region. Influenced by both the Labrador Current and the Gulf Stream, they face both the open Atlantic Ocean and the sheltered Gulf of St. Lawrence. On this trip, you visit Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, and experience all of the ”Five Seas” of Atlantic Canada: The mighty Atlantic Ocean, the Northumberland Strait, with the warmest waters north of the Carolinas, the Bay of Fundy, with the world’s highest tides, the Bras D’Or Lake, Cape Breton Island’s huge, salt ”inland sea” and last but not least the sheltered Gulf of St. Lawrence, fed from the mighty Great Lakes. With only a moderate population of people, but blessed with an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty, it is not surprising that the region contains 5 National Parks. There is city life – but the magic of the region is in its small towns and villages. If you want to meet the local people and enjoy local culture, the best way to become involved is by staying in small, alluring country inns.

Country Inns

Each inn is unique, with its own character, reflecting the ideals of the individual owners and its history. The architecture is often an attraction in itself – old sea-captain’s mansions compete with contemporary inns. These accommodations will tell you the story of the settlement and growth of Canada. Farmers from Holland and shipbuilders from the Rhineland built big mansions, rich industrialists from America and others who loved this country built their retirement houses and summer homes here, and these are now available to you as unique accommodation experiences.

Day 1
UK – Halifax

Your Canada holiday starts with Air Canada from London Heathrow to Halifax. On arrival, pick up your hire car and drive the short distance to your hotel. Halifax, Canada’s traditional gateway to the world, is the largest city in the region. Home to 5 universities and several colleges, it has the ambience of an old but vibrant university town.

Overnight(1): Halliburton Hotel or similar - Halifax

Day 2
Halifax – Charlos Cove/Sherbrooke ca.
(300 km)
As you follow Marine Drive where several oceanside parks provide sandy beaches and wild landscapes of rocky islands and promontories. Spend some time in Sherbrooke Village, which has been partially restored to its frontier days.
Overnight(1): Seawind Landing Country Inn - Charlos Cove

Day 3
Charlos Cove/Sherbrooke - Louisbourg
(240 km)
Explore the shores of Cape Canso, where legends say Prince Henry Sinclair landed a hundred years before Columbus’ historic voyage. Cross the causeway to Cape Breton Island.
Overnights(2): Point of Suites - Louisbourg

Day 4
Explore Cape Breton Island
A day at leisure to explore the attractions of the Island, including the Bras D'Or Lake, Canada's inland salt sea, the Fortress of Louisbourg, a reconstruction of the old French Capital of America, where in the summers costumed "animators" recreate the summer of 1744, wild seabird colonies.

Day 5
Louisbourg – Margaree/Mabou ca.
(300 km)
Follow the Cabot Trail, eastern America’s best loved scenic drive, into the highlands and through Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Here the road twists along the hillsides, one minute at sea level, the next near the tree-line. By mid-afternoon you drop down to the coast of Cheticamp, a centre for whale watching in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Overnight(1): Glenora Inn and Distillery Resort - Margaree/Mabou

Day 6
Margaree/Mabou - Charlottetown
(330 km)
Drive through the scenic hardwood hills of Eastern Nova Scotia, where it seems that every little roadside stream has been dammed by beavers, then cross by ferry to Prince Edward Island, Canada’s smallest province, P.E.I was know by the Indians as Abegweit, because of its rust-red soils and cliffs.
Overnights(2): Heritage Harbour House or similar -  Charlottetown

Day 7
Explore Prince Edward Island
Explore tiny Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island. Indulge in a seal watching cruise or enjoy the beaches. Some of Canada’s best beaches, ideal for recreation, long lonely hikes, and the observation of wildlife, are within a short drive from your inn.

Day 8
Charlottetown - Shediac/Sackville ca.
(200 km)
Today you cross the eight mile long “Confederation Bridge” one of the worlds longest, to return to the Canadian mainland. Explore the "Acadian Coast", home to the descendants of Canada’s first European settlers 400 years ago.
Overnight(1): Little Shemogue Country Inn - Shediac/Sackville

Day 9
Shediac/Sackville – St. Martins
(230 km)
The Bay of Fundy boasts the world’s highest tides, and you have a chance to experience them today at Chignecto Provincial Park. Visit Joggins and Parrsboro, where semi-precious gems and dinosaur fossils have been found.
Overnight(1): Tidal Watch Inn or similar - St. Martins

Day 10
St Martins - Digby ca.
(100 km excludes ferry)
If nature is your desire, explore the beginnings of the Fundy Trail Parkway, with high quality walking paths and striking viewpoints over the wild coast, right next door to your inn. If you like more sophisticated attractions, spend the morning in Saint John, with its busy market square of shops, museums and cafes. In the afternoon, a ferry cruise brings you across Bay of Fundy.

Overnight(1): Harbourview Inn - Digby

Day 11
Digby - South Shore/Mahone Bay
(200 km)
The Annapolis Valley, one of Canada’s richest farming areas, with old patrician wooden homes, intricately decorated by ship’s carpenters. Kejimkujik National Park contains 380 square km of untouched Canadian wilderness. Lunenburg’s history is that of the Atlantic Fishery and wooden ships are still built and maintained here.

Overnights(2): Bayview Pines Country Inn -  Lunenburg/Mahone Bay

Day 12

Lunenbourg/South Shore
Long, rocky harbours with uncountable bays and islands have made this a pirate's and smuggler's paradise for over 300 years. Tiny fishing villages cling to the ocean edge; white sand beaches stretch endlessly. Each day, small lobster boats go to sea and return with Nova Scotia's most precious export..

Day 13

South Shore/Mahone Bay - Halifax (150 km)
Visit Peggy's Cove, Canada's most picturesque fishing village, and continue to Halifax. Ships, from the Schooner Bluenose ll to naval vessels, can still be seen in he magnificent harbour, but old warehouses and shipfitters shops have become the heart of a tourist centre along the waterside.

Overnight(1): Halliburton Hotel or similar - Halifax
