What makes Chesterman Beach one of the world’s best beaches

A few weeks ago we looked at trips to Tofino, highlighting the fantastic wildlife watching opportunities and sights to see.

Since then, online travel experts TripAdvisor have released their hot-lists for 2013, including the world’s 25 best beaches. We weren’t surprised when we saw Chesterman Beach in Tofino at number 13. Out of the many beaches you’ll find in Tofino, Chesterman has been popular with all locals and holiday makers for many years.

But what, exactly, makes it one of the world’s best beaches?

The location

Chesterman is a stone’s throw from the Pacific Rim Highway and close to the village of Tofino, accessible by car with parking places located both at the North and South sections of the beach. Surrounded by leafy green forest yet with accommodation nearby, you get the feel of a secluded beach with all the comforts of home nearby.

The sand

One of the main things people look for in a beach is good sand. The long, flat stretch of compacted sand at Chesterman attracts joggers and walkers, but there are also areas with soft sand, suitable for building sandcastles.

The accommodation

Private cottages, rental cabins and luxury beach resorts are just a few of the accommodation options on Chesterman Beach’s waterfront and on the isolated Frank Island. There are also some excellent hotels in the surrounding area between the beach and downtown Tofino – our favourite is Best Western Tin Wis Resort.

The atmosphere

If you’re out and about in Tofino and you overhear a local say “see you at the beach later”, they will probably be talking about Chesterman. It’s where families go for walks with their pets, where friends meet for a surf, and where people meet to watch the sunset, sit around a beach fire and enjoy life together.

The activities

Although it’s the perfect spot to sit, reflect, and take in the beautiful view, the beach offers endless activities for all the family. Apart from surfing on the South Chesterman, there are opportunities for bird watching, swimming, picnicking, looking for sea life and counting clam holes along the sand.

The size

The beach stretches for over 3km and splits at Frank Island into two bays – North Chesterman and South Chesterman. It’s not too big to explore (walking the entire beach would take a couple of hours), but there’s also no danger of claustrophobia, even on busy days.

The wildlife

It doesn’t matter what time of year wildlife lovers visit the beach; each changing season brings new animals, birds and marine life to its shores. Spring and autumn bring geese, warblers and other shorebirds to the beach and its vicinity, and whales can be seen throughout spring and summer. Things to look out for all year round are eagles, osprey and small sea life creatures among the rocks.
